Phuket Government & Population

The island is divided into 3 districts, Thalang in the north, Kathu in the west, and Muang in the south.
Thailand's system of government relies upon a strong central authority, thus the Provincial Governor is a civil servant appointed by the Interior Ministry in Bangkok, as are the Nai Amphoe, or District Chief.

The cities of Phuket and Patong have their own city governments, with elected city councils, the leading members of which serve as mayor.

There are also elected provincial, district, and sub-district, or Tambon councils. The local constabulary is part of the Interior.

Official population, as of December, 1998, was 231,206. However, this figure only covers those people who are registered as living in Phuket.

Phuket' s attraction as a center of economic activity has resulted in many living on the island whose registration is elsewhere.

The total population of Phuket varies considerably depending on the time of year, though it is never less than the figure given above.

Phuket Climate

Phuket's weather conditions are dominated by monsoon winds that blow year round. It is therefore always warm and humid. There are two distinct seasons, rainy and dry.
The rainy season begins in May and lasts till October, during which the monsoon blows from the southwest.

The dry season is from November through April, when the monsoon comes from the northeast.

Highest average temperatures, at 33.4ºC, prevail during March. Lowest averages occur in January, when nightly lows dip to 22ºC.

Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It's warm all year 'round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The September-October period is also the wettest.

The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool NE monsoon season, from November though March, when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75ºF to 89ºF (24ºC to 32ºC).

The hottest time is from April through May, with temperatures ranging from 80ºF to 95ºF (27ºC to 36ºC). There are frequent short heavy thundery showers, offering welcome relief from the temperature and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs on April 13th and everyone sprinkles (or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder!

Locals enjoy June, July and August, since the weather is usually fine and our favourite haunts remain uncrowded. The usual pattern is brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Everything is a little less expensive at this time of year, as well. Temperatures range between 70ºF and 90ºF (20ºC to 33ºC).

During September and early October locals start to remember their umbrellas. This makes an ideal time to visit abroad. One consolation for those who remain is that the beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets are relatively uncluttered by visitors.

And even at this time, we still get long intervals of sunshine between the heavy showers. Plenty of low season activities, both water- and land-based, are still available on Phuket during this wettest part of the summer season.

Location and Boundaries

Leam Promthep

There is a place on a hill at the south west end of the island:
Laem Promthrep Cape: a good viewing point on several Beaches - (also see the 3 beaches point).

In the evening there are a lot of tourists here to see the sunset.

Because this is a common touristic spot here, you also have little shops and stands for food and drink.
If you have never seen the stink fruit, this is the place you get it.

There is also a small religious site here. It is surrounded by many statuettes of elefants.

Patong Beach [night shot]

Patong Beach Night Shot
Patong Beach, Phuket This is Phuket's central tourist and night time entertainment district. Over the year, Patong has turned from a fishing village into one of the island's two cities. The famous bay and 4 km. beach remain as they were, with development limited to the area back of the beach road. There, however, virtually every kind of entertainment imaginable awaits visitors, with bars catering to every nationality. Live music can be found in many places, and there are also discotheques. Accommodations range from budget to five-star. Shopping opportunities appear to be endless. Whatever one's culinary disposition, a restaurant catering to it will be found. In addition, there are many tour companies waiting to help visitors plan their vacations.

Just north of Patong Bay, starting from about the Novotel Resort Hotel Patong to Thavorn Bay Resort, this area consists of rocky but quiet beaches, and an interesting road leading up into hills with high viewpoints and a few good quality restaurants perched on the edge and top. Some housing compounds are now being built on the hillsides and the whole area is steadily moving upmarket.

Long Tail Boat

On the coasts of Southern Thailand, the long tail (longtail) boat is king. They are incredibly versatile, acting as dive boats, fishing boats, ferries, cargo ships, and more. Likely a sign of status and wealth among the locals, owning such a boat would undoubtedly help to ensure a stable income. The boats are large, often more than ten metres (30 feet) long.

Why are they called long tails? Though you can't see it from this vantage, long tail boats have a simple propeller at the end of a long drive-shaft connected to an even larger engine, (often removed from a car or truck). The boats are noisy, and surely some damage the sensitive ecosystem that they depend on ... but their simple beauty is undeniable.

There are two smaller island in the vicinity, which also have white sandy beaches and good snorkeling reefs.

Nai Yang Beach, combined with Mai Khao Beach to the north, is the longest stretch of sandy beach on the island, covering 9 km. It is here that you will find giant sea turtles and throughout the dry season, October through February, this is where they come ashore to lay their eggs. One of the activities of the Songkhran Festival in April is to release turtles back to the sea. There is great swimming and snorkeling along this beach with access to Phuket Campground and Nai Yang National Park. Kata Beach Photos

Very popular with families, Kata is an all round favourite due to its spectacular palm-lined beach, great restaurants, lively but not raucous nightlife and varied accommodation options - all close to the beach. From May to October surfers flock to catch Kata's waves and from November to April the beach is alive with sunseekers.

Kata is split into two focal areas: Kata Centre, which is at the northern end close to Karon and Kata South, home to several resorts. The Club Med takes up most of the beach road, resulting in a shaded footpath that makes for a pleasant stroll. Continuing on through the village, visitors will find an abundance of shops to browse in, from souvenir and ready-to-wear outlets, to 7-Elevens and local mini-marts, to name-brand fashion stores. There are also plenty of dive shops and tour operators to assist those looking to explore beyond the beach.

Golf in Phuket [ 23 pics]

Phuket has four fine golf courses, all of which have been designed to take full advantage of the island's tropical trees and abundant water. Many visitors come solely for golf, but accompanying family members rarely complain about being left to laze by the pool or on the beach.

Standards are high and there are enough challenges to stretch scratch players.

Chalong Temple, Wat Chalong [19 pics]

Wat Chalong, situated approximately eight kms southeast of Phuket town, with its typical architecture found throughout Thailand, is not known for its artistic merit.

But the temple still remains the biggest and the most beautifully ornamented of Phuket's 29 Buddhist monasteries.

The Chalong Temple is associated with three revered monks of Luang Pro Chaem, renowned herbal doctors and setters of bones, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Ahngyee -- Chinese Coolie, Rebellion in 1876 during the reign of Rama V.

Statues of Luang Por Chuang and Luang Por Gluam, other monks who were abbots of the temple during later times, and who are the objects of respect and recipients of offerings by Phuket people generally, are enshrined at the Temple.

Actually entering into the temple you are not charged any admission fees but a small donation of 10 baht to contribute to maintenance or restoration costs is appreciated.

Remember - remove your shoes before entering any temple building.

Do not treat the Buddha images disrespectfully, however, you may photograph monks (importantly, women should remember not to touch them), temples or images and all Buddhist ceremonies.

For the most memorable visit try to time your trip for the weekly holy day when the monks chant Buddhist scriptures in the mornings. The holy days are based on a lunar calendar, so check with the locals to plan your excursion.

Phuket Old Town [22 pics]

Phuket plays host to a wonderful mix of nationalities who have chosen to live here: it has Thais, Chinese, Malays, Indians and Nepalese, a young and growing Eurasian community and a unique mix of Hokkien Chinese and Thais called 'Baba'.

The Baba community's heritage can be seen in Phuket's Old Town in its architecture, commerce, dress and way of life. The core of the Old Town essentially is made up of five roads and several 'sois' (small streets), these are Rasada Rd, Phang Nga Rd, Thalang Rd, Dibuk Rd, and Krabi Rd. This quarter teems with history and after years of neglect is currently being renovated.

Patong Beach [21 pics]

Patong Beach is a beach on Phuket's west coast. It is the main tourist resort in Phuket and contains the centre of Phuket's nightlife and cheap shopping on the island. The beach became popular with western tourists, especially Europeans, in the late 1980s. Numerous large hotels and chain hotels are located in Paton

Patong Beach is maybe more famous for its nightlife than the 2-kilometer beach that runs the entire length of Patong. Nightlife is centered on two main areas Bangla Road and Paradise Complex, with Bangla Road being predominantly straight and Paradise Complex being predominantly gay. Much mixing of the two scenes occurs due to Phuket Island's tolerant nature.

On December 26, 2004, Patong Beach along with many other areas along the western coast of Phuket and Thailand were struck by a tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The wave caused a great deal of destruction to the waterfront of the beach although the destruction was not nearly as bad as nearby in Khao Lak. It took probably less than 6 months to rebuild 80% of what was destroyed and 1 year after you could hardly not see any traces of destruction caused by the Tsunami.

Khao Kad Bay Update More..

Being a rather hilly place, Phuket is full of great views. We like to find the high spots, get some fresh air and sit on top of the world. Sometimes, it's good for your spirit just to get up above it all for a while.

The viewpoint at Khao Khad is up a hill on Cape Panwa, in the SE corner of Phuket. Getting there is easy enough when you know how, but it's not very well signposted and the signs that do exist are mostly in Thai. There are several roads leading there - Cape Panwa has many small roads and is a great area to drive around.
